Before furniture covers the rooms
Walk through the empty home, photograph existing condition, and use any move-in inspection form provided. Record concerns in the process agreed with the property contact. Keep a copy of what you submit.
Locate the agreed parking and unloading space. Check that the route to each room is clear before directing helpers. Place labeled boxes directly in their destination rooms where possible.
Check access and safety
Confirm which keys and access devices you received and whom to contact if something does not work. Locate exits, the breaker panel, and water shutoff; ask for help identifying anything unfamiliar.
Test smoke alarms according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends monthly testing. Check carbon monoxide devices and other safety equipment according to their instructions and the property’s arrangements. Report missing or faulty equipment promptly.
Open the first-night box
Pack this before the move and keep it reachable. Separate the personal bag that travels with you from bulky household supplies.
| Personal bag | Household box |
|---|---|
| Medication, documents, keys | Toilet paper, hand soap, towels |
| Phone and chargers | Bedding and basic lighting |
| Clothes and toiletries | Water, easy food, and simple utensils |
| Pet or child essentials as needed | Basic tools, trash bags, and cleaning cloths |
Use the first week to close loose ends
Start with the rooms you use every day. Flatten empty boxes as you go, but keep packaging that may be needed to document or resolve damage.
Check service transfers and important mail. Record missing or damaged belongings, then contact the provider using the relevant process. Review your budget for final charges and refunds so the moving total is complete.
- Put one temporary collection point in each room for misplaced items.
- Set aside a donation box for belongings that do not fit the new space.
- Finish unpacking essentials before buying storage furniture.
