Moving checklist: eight weeks through move-in
Start with the decisions that other tasks depend on: where you are going, when you can enter, and how your belongings will get there. This timeline is a suggested order of work. If your move is closer, use the short-notice plan below rather than treating missed dates as failure.
Make a dated checklist — free, with no account.
Six to eight weeks before: reduce uncertainty
Walk through every room and separate what you will move from what you can sell, give away, or recycle. Include cupboards, outdoor storage, and furniture you are still deciding about. A smaller inventory can change the equipment you need.
Write down access restrictions at both homes: stairs, elevator booking, loading space, door widths, and the earliest time you can collect keys. Confirm these with the building or property contact. Save their answers beside the booking details.
- Choose DIY transport, hired labor, or a full-service mover.
- Record known costs and leave unknown costs blank until confirmed.
- For interstate movers, consult FMCSA registration and document guidance before agreeing to services.
Three to five weeks before: book and pack
Reserve the transport or help your move needs. Read what is included, how changes are handled, and when payment is expected. Keep a copy of the agreement.
Pack one low-use room first. Count the boxes it actually takes and use that observation to adjust the rest of your supply list. Label the destination room on the top and a side of each box so it remains identifiable in a stack.
- Keep donation and disposal tasks on the same schedule as packing.
- Record box numbers if you want to check delivery against an inventory.
- Separate anything the provider cannot transport and arrange an alternative.
The final two weeks: services and essentials
Arrange utility and internet dates around the actual handoff. Ask providers what happens if the move date changes.
Use the official USPS change-of-address service for forwarding, then update important senders directly. Forwarding is not a substitute for changing your details with every organization.
Put personal documents, medications, keys, chargers, and a change of clothes in a bag that travels with you. Keep basic cleaning supplies accessible until the old home is empty.
Moving in a week? Use this order
Compress the sequence, not the access checks. Focus on decisions that can stop the move if left unresolved.
| When | Priority |
|---|---|
| Today | Confirm access, transport, help, and essential costs. |
| Next two days | Sort obvious donations, get boxes, pack low-use items. |
| Before the last day | Confirm service changes and pack essentials separately. |
| Moving day | Check inventory and condition, clear every cupboard, hand over keys as agreed. |
Keep the checklist useful after arrival
Check delivered items before discarding packing materials. Photograph concerns and follow the provider’s reporting process. Unpack the bedroom and bathroom before tackling less urgent rooms.
The free checklist lets you mark tasks done, skip irrelevant ones, add notes, and add your own jobs. Dates are suggested work dates; they are not legal deadlines.
- Print a copy before travel if internet access may be unreliable.
- Keep the digital checklist in your browser or save it into a full plan.
- Export a plan backup before clearing browser data.
